Green Bean Casserole November 20, 2008

Growing up, Momma Babs and I always went to my grandma’s for Thanksgiving.  We always took a dish and that dish was always Green Bean Casserole.

By the time I could work a can opener, Momma Babs put me in charge of the casserole.  I would dutifully make the casserole and proudly unveil it when we arrived at my grandma’s.  But guess what.

I fuggin HATED green bean casserole!

Every year I would make that nasty mess but I would never taste it.  I can’t for the life in me figure out why we even took it.  I don’t think anyone really ever ate it.  The last year I made it was the last year we had it.  Green Bean Casserole has never made an appearance at an O’Leary family gathering since.

What’s the one dish you don’t like at Thanksgiving?

Cranberry Sauce (is that really a dish, though?)

2. Gladys - November 20, 2008

Candied yams. I hardly eat them.

3. keyalus - November 20, 2008

I don’t like mac and cheese or candied yams. I’m iffy on collards too. Come to think of it I really just like Thanksgiving for the desserts!

Good thing I put you on cake!

4. CreoleInDC - November 20, 2008

That’s not a pic of YOUR green bean casserole is it?

Umm, I haven’t made it since I was about 13 so no. I didn’t have a digital cam in 1987.

5. Honest - November 20, 2008

Sweet potatoes or Candied Yams or even cranberry sauce. For some reason I just don’t like ‘em.

6. *Coop* - November 20, 2008

White beans of any type. Great Northern, Navy, Lima…yuck! I barely like black beans and pinto beans.

A vegan that doens’t like beans!

7. y - November 20, 2008

I don’t do cranberry sauce. Ew. But I love cranberry juice and cranberries themselves. I prefer white meat turkey.
I hate green bean casserole as well. I also hate pea salad. its like green peas with onions and some white stuff. gross.
I hate turnips with rutabagas. the white part. its nasty and they stink. I also hate anything with beets. blech!

8. Marta - November 20, 2008

I hate cranberry sauce as well…I dont like anything to do with cranberries, unless it’s a splash of juice with Grey Goose LOL

9. Miss Ali D - November 20, 2008

I’m not into collard greens, etc. My mom also make brussel spouts, and I’m touch and go with those too.

I got so excited when I saw the Green Bean casserole. That’s one of the dishes that my mom ALWAYS makes for Turkey day and I love it..lol. The general consensus in my fam is that most don’t like it..oh well more for me.

Umm…a dish that I can’t stand on Turkey day…hmmm, yea I agree w/ ‘y’ Pea salad is the nastiest ish I have ever in life tasted.

Uh…er…um I only thought my white brothers and sisters had green bean casserole. Never seent it on black folks tables. Must be a Southern thing.

Not a big collard green fan either.

You forget where I grew up. Not a black person in sight!

Ditto TIH, I was just about to say the same thing…i didn’t know that “we” ate that. I like pretty much all the dishes served at Thanksgiving, I can’t think of one that I don’t care for. Although it seems that we always have a guest that tries to bring something different (and yucky) and it doesn’t go over well.

13. jack - November 20, 2008

White meat, can’t stand it!

14. CaliSlim - November 20, 2008

Yams/Sweet Potatoes.

Blech.

15. amyg - November 20, 2008

I hate the cranberry stuff. Was watching paula dean last night and she made sweet potato balls! They looked so good! I forget if sweet potatoes is on your menu, but these look like a fantastic twist…

16. K.I.M. - November 20, 2008

lol – I like it all. I starve a day before Thanksgiving so I can make as much room for all the fixings possible. My least fav, but by no means something I don’t like…candied yams. I prefer salty foods in general over sweet.

17. onefromphilly - November 20, 2008

I hate stuffing. It’s just wet bread and other stuff..ICK

I’m with TIH. I never heard of Black folk having string bean casserole.

18. SimplyB - November 20, 2008

Mystery meat. My parents are good for putting a racoon or something on the table. No thanks!

I eat all the other traditional TG foods.

19. AR Gal - November 20, 2008

I love, love, LOVE me some GB casserole. I love green beans too though.

Anyway, I can stand pumpkin pie. Blech!

20. jamie - November 20, 2008

I don’t like Turkey.

I could skip it too. Much rather have ham.

21. Tsiporah - November 20, 2008

Ditto what TIH said. I have never seen green been casserole on Black folk table. I never even heard of it until my first Thanksgiving away from home.

I don’t like cranberry sauce…yuck.

22. 1969 - November 20, 2008

I like everything about Thanksgiving. Turkey, dressing, collards, whatever!

And that casserole is NASTEE

23. Clu - November 20, 2008

Potato salad…I always used to make it for the fam but I never ate it.

poo

24. Krush - November 20, 2008

I don’t like turkey. My family is usually those ghetto folks who pull out the grill on Thanksgiving morning.

25. Kayla - November 20, 2008

I don’t like cranberry sauce and stuffing, which I will not have at my house this Thanksgiving. I told the folks if they wanted some, they should bring it with them.

26. Erica B. - November 20, 2008

I wouldn’t go near stuffing! I’m a Southerner, we do cornbread dressing. Wet bread stuffed into poultry cavity does not sound appetizing. I also don’t touch cranberry sauce.

27. s23 - November 20, 2008

I don’t like pumpkin pie or sweet potatoe pie.

28. tanyetta - November 20, 2008

Green Bean Casserole should be ILLEGAL in all 80000 states and all around the world. YUCK YUCK and YUCK.

I don’t like pork in my greens neither.

29. cbean - November 20, 2008

Dang why yall hating on the cranberry sauce? LOL. The thing I hate is that Watergate Salad crap. Ugh!

Amen!! Cranberry sauce is the truth! Oooh wee!

30. Rehab - November 20, 2008

I’m not too keen on anything resembling the intestines of pigs..

31. Beautifully Complex - November 20, 2008

White Turkey Meat is the only I will pass on. Everything else is on my plate !

32. K. - November 21, 2008

cranberry sauce. and truthfully, i could live w/o the turkey and usually only eat a tiny piece. but everything else? pile it on!

33. Jean - November 21, 2008

The only thanksgiving things I hate are macaroni and cheese, cheescake, or anything with cranberrys or, any kind of fruit salad or desert basically. Also, the only pie that I don’t hate is pumpkin, but even on Thanksgiving we usually have some kind of pie(s) BUT pumpkin. I also pass on the Turkey and the gravey and I won’t eat the mashed potatoes because they are very plain. However I love the green bean salad, stuffing and steamed carrots with no butter or salt. That’s about it except for the sweet potatoe foods; my mom never liked them so she or anyone else of my extened relatives never made them and I never even knew sweat potatoe casserole existed until this year. Likely I won’t make them either though because sugar with vegetable does not sound good and I do not eat marshmellows because of the gelatin in them so that rules that out. Oh, and zuccini salad is also delicious and the potato salad would be, except that in my family they do not add even close to enough Spin Blend so it is disgusting like that. I shun the Green Bean Casserole haters though; I never used to like it but the more I ate it the more I liked it, now whenver I make it a brother of mine compliments me al the time on it oddly tells me how I am going to make a good wife one day. Weird.

34. Bridgette - November 21, 2008

Today I was in the grocery store shopping and an older white lady said: “Can I ask you a question? Do you know what kind of green beans go in the green bean casserole? Is it french style or regular?” I immediately thought of this post and wanted to LOL. I just answered truthfully that I didn’t know.

I think I came out of lurkerville a while ago but I rarely comment.

35. brannon - November 21, 2008

Prefer ham over turkey, love cranberry sauce…HATE green bean casserole too. I made it once, thought it was gross and never made the attempt again. The only other thing I can think of that I hate at Thanksgiving are chitterlings…but no one in the family has made them since the 80s, I believe.

36. dmac - November 24, 2008

hog intestines! YUK, YUK, and extra YUK! their smell contaminates the entire house!
