What do you think? August 19, 2008

What do you think about lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18?
I think it should be lowered. Let’s face it, the laws aren’t currently stopping 18 year olds from drinking. There are plenty of people that will buy for them, and there are plenty of places that don’t even card. Moreover, if you are old enough to go to war and fight for your country, then why in the hell can’t you end a long azz day dodging bullets with a cold one?

Being from Louisiana and growing up during the 18 year old drinking requirement – which was on paper only, especially during Mardi Gras. But I digress…I never knew other states were different until I came to Georgia. I think if you can do everything else at 18, and you’re legally considered an adult at 18 then that should be consistent across the board with everything.

I said almost this exact thing when I saw this report on the news this morning. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
I’d rather they raise the age for everything else. Make adult age 21 or something. And I definitely want to raise the driving age to at least 18.
I agree, I think that since “18″ is the legal adult age, then you should be able to drink as well. Most 18yr olds have older friends or look older themselves, and are able to get liquor anyway.
I agree with CaliSlim……they should increase the adult age to 21 and make the legal drinking age 25.
I think it should be 18 also. I agree with the military sentiment. When I was serving my time, the bars on and near military bases NEVER carded.
How about we keep things the way they are? I don’t know personally; however, I’d assume that those in the military between 18 and 21 don’t have too hard of a time getting alcohol if they desire.
In regards to kids btwn 18 and 20 not in the military…I think that parents should teach their kids responsible drinking prior to their kids being independent (just as they would teach thier child about chex or other potentially dangerous, yet pleasurable activities). Not that it would prevent drunk nights, but it might be helpful for a child to understand, under the supervision of a parent, what being tipsy feels like. A parent could say…if you start feeling like ‘this,’ you need not to drive, or develop a buddy system with a friend (ionno?..but something).
And some US economies couldn’t support the concept of raising the driving age to 18. For example, Va Beach depends on child labor (15-18) in the summer to help support the tourism industry.
KIM, of course there are exceptions to the driving age rule. Even now. You can get your license earlier than 16, if necessary.
By the way, that pic is HILARIOUS, Babs!
I don’t drink and I think it should be lowered. It’s pointless and law enforcement can spend energy on other stuff.
The kid who is reckless at 18 hasn’t matured by 21 to be less reckless in my opinion. Let the drinking age be lowered. Who cares, and I’m not sure why they increased it in the first place. Everywhere else in the world the age is 18 or there’s no age limit. Why do we always have to be so difficult.
