You’ve got to see it to be-weave it June 17, 2008

Today I am going to share with you why Babs and fake hair don’t mix.  I only wish I had a digital camera back then to capture the memories.  If I weren’t so lazy it didn’t require effort, I would take the few pics I have and have them copied onto a disk.

In my adulthood, I’ve worn fake hair probably five times.  I started, as most young ladies do, wearing braids.  At the time I thought it was cute and in the one picture I have, it doesn’t look too bad.  I wore braids a couple times more over the next few years and each time it got worse in my opinion.

About 5 or 6 years ago, actually it was more than that, I was working at a different plantation back in Collegetown.  I remember seeing a picture of Quee.n La.tifah and thinking that her hairstyle would look cute on me.  At time I was holding a lot more weight than I am now and likened myself to her.

So I found someone to install, geez I don’t even know the correct terminology, my weave.  It was this guy at this black salon.  He instructed me on what type of hair to buy.  I bought it and showed up for my appointment excited.  For the first time ever I was going to have long, flowing hair down my back.  Ha!

Now, I don’t know much about the installation of hair weaves, but I do know this guy didn’t do it right.  He braided my hair vertically down my scalp instead of horizontally.  He knew he was doing it differently, but that was his special technique.  Then he sewed the tracks in horizontally.  This caused my scalp to be pulled so tight I really and truly thought thought my head was bleeding.  No, seriously.  It was the worst pain I have ever known.  And I’ve had broken bones!

The end product looked absofuggin ridiculous.  Everyone I saw thought it looked cute, except for the Ex who just kept laughing.  I felt like a fool.  A big headed, scalp bleeding fool.  I was embarrased to go to work but I did.  All day long people kept complimenting me; I just wanted to crawl under my desk and cry.

When I got home I decided I could not take another moment of pain or embarrasment.  I stood in the bathroom and uninstalled the janky weave.  By the time the Ex got home I was washing and drying my hair.  He howled!

My one and only experience with a weave lasted no more than 24 hours.

HAAAAAAAAAAA bless your heart! I know what you mean though. My weave experience has been very very limited too. I did so more in H.S. w/ the ponytails and stuff. Oh yea… installed= sewn in, tracked up, lol.

Ahhh, sewn in. Gotcha.

I’ve never worn a weave but I did wear braids twice “brandy” braids with burnt ends in high school and some poetic justice mess in college-that lasted less than a week.

I’ve had braids and weaves, fortunately I’ve had WONDERFUL and TALENTED stylists to do my hair and they really looked great. It depends on the skill of the stylist and if he or she really loves you they will advise the client on a style that truly fits them and not let the client just get a style because it looks cute on someone else. Unfortunately, there are lots of stylist who will do whatever to get the dollars and will allow folks to walk out of the shops looking crazy. I no longer get weaves or braids. I’m rocking the natural look and I love it! Thankfully my stylist/friend was very supportive in my decision. I encourage any woman to just do you when it comes to your hair;whether it’s braids, weaves, or falls. Remember your true beauty comes from within! Sorry you had that experience Babs. With the right stylist I KNOW you would’ve given Beyonce a run for her money! You’re Fabu without the weave anyway…Smooches!

You most certainly are rocking the natural!

LOL! Babs you are too funny. I’m not a big fan of weaves. However, I remember one of the times when I was letting my hair grow out from my short haircut. I saw a style that Halle Berry had with longer hair so my stylist gave me a weave…but not like the one I wanted…she gave me a quick weave…the worst:) I ended up pulling it up on top of my head…I hated it. When I got back home I ended up taking it out. Another time I was letting my hair grown out, I pulled my hair back in a small ponytail and added a hair piece and twisted it around into a nice bun. This time my experience was good. No one could tell that it wasn’t my hair. It had like a draw string attachment so it could be tied tightly to my own small ponytail.

I’ve done the bun thing too. And I think I’ve even worn ponytails back in my early twenties.

That’s a darn shame! I’ve had so many clients tell me that they’ve had bad experiences with their previous hair stylists.

Some people pride themselves on braiding tightly, but they have to realize that it causes serious damage to the scalp (and PAIN too)

If you’re ever brave enough to do it again, go to a highly recommended stylist (You’ve gotta see their previous work).

I’m a BIG fan of weaves btw. LOL

I won’t be doing that again. I got pretty good at doing my own hair. I don’t even go to stylists for routine upkeep and relaxers.

One of my closest friends is rocking fly wigs right now because of years of wearing weaves. I don’t hate on folks wearing them because if done right right they look fabu, but like any hair style you have to switch your game up.

I’ve always wanted to try a curly wave weave. I’m too impatient to sit still that long. My husband has issues. He hates when I wear a scarf to bed can you imagine if I came home with a curly wave weave?

He would prolly put me out! LOL ;)

lol@ “I don’t know much about the installation of hair weaves, but…”

I had some tracks installed to make a fuller flip in the back of my hair for about one night to go to a party and decided it wasnt for me.

[...] Once we got in the car I took my wig off and vowed never to wear fake hair again.  But we all know how that turned out. [...]
