It’s time to go to work!
Those are the words shared by Gunny Harren, or as we affectionately called him- the Gunny. Today the USD.A ventured to Wild West Traders in Austell for what is clearly my favorite outing to date. I have always wanted to go to a shooting range and today I got my chance. This outing was orginally scheduled for last month, but the day before the Gunny called me to say he had the flu. We rescheduled for today and it was well worth the wait.
The players: Babs, Fergie, MiMi and Keyalus
We kept this outing private because of the logistics involved with scheduling the Gunny. Also, more than 4 people would have not been fun at all.
We started out in the classroom where the Gunny gave us some very candid instruction on gun laws and safety. He talked to us about different scenarios and what actions we, as women, should take. I learned that if faced with an intruder I should not shoot him in the kneecaps to bring him down, I should aim with the intention of bringing his face to the ground. Go to work on him!
He pulled out two different guns and we learned the difference between a revolver and a semi-automatic. Babs was partial to the Bersa semi-automatic. It was small and light. And I have to tell you, that cold steel felt nice in my hot little hands!
We moved to the ranges and put on our protective gear for eyes and ears. When we first walked into the range, the sound of the guns popping off was alarming. In addition, the smell of the gun powder was strong. It smelled like a civil war battlefield. It truly took me about 10 minutes to calm down and take it all in. MiMi and Keyalus were up first. They did a great job with their targets. MiMi seemed particularly comfortable with the revolver. I kept waiting for her to blow the smoke wafting from the gun like Dirty Harry.
Fergie and I went next. I started with the revolver and then we switched. He took us through routines of aiming and shooting off five rounds in a ten second period. Then we did a drill where we sat the gun down and quickly picked it up and shot off two rounds at the gut. It was awesome!
I REALLY enjoyed this outing. I totally see myself owning a gun and going to the range for an hour or so to practice. I would like to make this my new hobby. In addition, I wouldn’t mind having a firearm for safety and going to the range and practicing would make me feel more comfortable about owning one.

MiMi will be planning the April outing. If you are intersted in joining us, please hit me up on email.

Looks like fun!
I have ALWAYS wanted to do that! I made a friend of mine that is now a police office in SC swear that he would take me to the firing range when I visit. I would feel odd just wandering in there by myself. lol.
ROFL! I AM LOOKING AT THESE PICS DYING LAUGHING! JUST DYING! ON THE FLOOR!
Whew! Go yall!
Go head wicha bad selves! That’s what’s up! I always get a rush whenever I go to the range. And having a firearm definitely helps in making you feel safe, especially if you know how to use it and are comfortable firing it.
My husband has a gun. I don’t know how to shoot it. I’ve only held it once(unloaded). I’ve kind of felt removed from the whole gun ownership thing. I’m not entirely sure why. oh well. Looks like you guys had fun!

I’m so scared of guns. Nothing has ever happened to me between a gun, but the whole notion of owning one and having it in my home, freaks me out. Going to a shooting range would definitely help me get over my phobia.
I was actually drooling at this post and the pictures. The only thing I love more than a true independent Black woman is showing her how to shoot..
I was in the military and it is nothing more fun than going with a fellow military chick to the gun range for a date. I wish it was a Cruise Ship excursion to go to a gun range on an island where you can shoot the big things with your significant other.
I think all responsible men should take their date to the gun range within six weeks of dating and show her how to use it. And I’m impressed knowing a female went out her way to teach herself.
In fact, I will argue that all sistas should take her new date to the gun range to show him know how she gets down. Make sure he see you put groupings below the target waistline so he get the message will quick that you ain’t to be messed with.
Now that’s my kind of activity. The range plays a big part in my life for releasing stress.
Glad everyone enjoyed the experience.
looks like a fun time!
is that babs without the black oval?
Love it! That’s what I call an activity! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun!
The gun range is one of my fave destressing activities. My baby is a Ruger .45 that I named after my grandfather (Albert).
Oh yeah. Coop’s gangsta! lol
Old School Beretta 9mm’s are nice too.
I would have been a bit nervous, but, it looks like you guys had a good time.
Me too, I would be mad nervous, but I wanna try it. When in April are you doing it? I’d come down for it. BTW, you didn’t mention where to shoot to get the intruder’s face on the ground…
